I could forget bringing my wallet, but I’ll never let my best tools left behind: Pencil and Paper! I could spend the day with pencil or pen or pastel in my hand which some people keep think that I waste my time. In a meeting – which I do it a lot – people who lead the meeting or the boss sometimes looks irritated when see me doodling. I am an illustrator and designer, for me doodling or drawing some rough sketches help me to get my mind focus and get my work done. Doodling also helps me to understand my surrounding, I could easily remember what people saying by doodling. Am I bored at the meeting, of course yes! but doodling help me to keep focus.
So, what does drawing doodle mean?
Wikipedia defines it as “an unfocused drawing made while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract shapes.” We as human have always had a desire to visualized what’s in our minds and memory and to communicate those ideas with others. That’s why an article with an image is more interesting that the one that have no image at all.
Is doodling only for illustrator and designer?
Apparently NO. Some studies showed that doodlers pay more attention to the words more than people think. Doodling helps the brain to focus and keeps the mind from wandering away or day dreaming. In a lecture or in a meeting, it helps people to memorize whatever is happening. This means, that people who draw doodle will have more understanding of what the boss saying in the meeting or what the teacher teaching during a lecture.
Doodling, drawing pictures are about understanding our surrounding and to respond effectively using visual tools. So, what are you waiting for? Just do it!
